On November 1st 2011 my fashion class took a trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum which I really enjoyed as it was a new experience.
For me getting to London was the hardest part, as I don’t like the underground, but once I got to the museum it was outstanding. As we walked to the entrance I was amazed at the size of the building as it was so big. After lunch we had a tour and talk of 18th and 19th Century Fashion, we looked at dresses and suits from different periods. The tour lady talked about the history behind the clothes and then we had to sketch and write facts about each one.
My favourite fact was ...when a member of your family died in Victorian times you had to wear black for a certain amount of time, different lengths of time depending on the family member to show your respect for them.
At the end of the tour I was put forward to try on a corset, as it was tightened I was struggling to breath, I don’t see how the Victorians could wear it so tight every day.
I can honestly say I really enjoyed the day and found it interesting to see some of the fashion in the Victorian times.
