Year 8 Enterprising Technology Students Are Tomorrow's Engineers

Posted: 12th May 2011

A group of Year 8 Design and Technology students have been working for the last two months with mentors from Network Rail to ensure that the new office building in CMK, on the site of the old Hockey Stadium, is as green as can be.

On Thursday 5th May, the students enjoyed a presentation from Howard Penstone, Managing Director of Network Rail Developments and Lisa Belsham, Programme Manager for Network Rail. Howard explained the cutting edge technology under development to ensure a green future for the new building and how painstaking the design team had been to make this a sustainable project – including 'green' and 'brown' roofs, water retention schemes and exciting heating systems.

He was delighted to hear about the projects that the Year 8 students had been working on with the mentors from Network Rail and their Design and Technology teacher, Mr Cromwell. Commenting on their design ideas, Howard said: 'We have in front of us 25 engineers of the future.'

Samuel Agbana, project manager for one of the teams explained: 'We plan each week carefully and decide what we are going to do, this project is about saving energy and reducing our carbon footprint.' Siyabonga Ndebele added: 'I think this project helps our future careers, we have found out how buildings are run and how they are built.'
