Studio 6 students attended a Formula Student event at Bedford Modern, it was a a rare opportunity for our students to talk to Automotive Engineering undergraduates about the Formula Student project and for them to see what automotive engineering involves at university level. The event was run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), to promote careers and excellence in engineering by challenging university students to design, build, develop, market and compete as a team, with a small single seater racing car. Students were provided with a real-life exercise in design and manufacture as well as the business elements of automotive engineering.
Three university teams brought their single seater racing car for display, and made a presentation describing a particular aspect of their project. Students had the opportunity to look at teh different cars and ask the engineering students questions. The team made presentations which were judged by a panel of senior engineers from the Motor Racing industry, and a prize was awarded to the team with the best presentation.
The event was informative and beneficial to our students as they consider their future careers. While much of this event was focused on automotive engineering, there are many skills that are transferrable to most science and engineering disciplines, and may be useful to all considering science and engineering in the future.
