Employers go back to school

Posted: 23rd January 2012

More than 30 local employers went back to school recently to help Academy students understand more about the world of work.

Thirty people from a range of Milton Keynes-based firms including BP, Network Rail, Serco and Audi UK, spent time with Year 10 students.

The employers talked to around 180 young people about their own careers, answering questions and giving practical advice.  They also provided valuable one-to-one interview practice.

One of those taking part was Community and Engagement Manager Allison Carlton from NHS Milton Keynes. She said: “I think it’s key for students to get a sense of what it is like outside in the working environment.  Talking to employers at this event has also helped the students develop their interpersonal skills.”

The action-packed careers event also involved students attending a Bright Futures workshop aimed at helping them succeed when applying for work, training or university places.

Academy Director of Personal Development, Ms Gockelen, added: “This event has been a brilliant opportunity for students to discover what employers are looking for and to find out about different occupations.  It has certainly boosted their confidence and prepared them for work experience placements at the end of February.”
