Students Visit Crime Scenes

January 2010

Students were shocked when they walked into a crime scene.

But it was all set up for the Year 11 students as part of a forensic science unit used in their science sessions. At Key Stage 4 the students either study GCSE or BTEC in science.

The students have just started the crime processing part of their course and their teacher, Kelly Stone, set up a mock crime scene with a ‘dead' body and a host of evidence they needed to collect to solve the ‘crime'.

And Miss Stone is the perfect person to teach this kind of thing as she spent three years studying forensic science at the University of Lincoln.

The students are learning how to analyse crime scenes, fingerprints, blood spatter, footwear impressions and inks.

At the end of the topic they will work in teams to process a crime scene involving searching for evidence, fingerprinting and working out how the person was killed.

Miss Stone said " The Year 11 students that have performed the crime scene processing so far have been incredibly mature, they have used the skills they have learnt to effectively take evidence from the scene and analyse it in the lab. I am extremely proud of the effort and determination put in by the students and feel confident that they are well equipped with the skills they need as they progress into 6th form, college or employment."

The Science Team are planning to run a sixth form level of the course in Studio 6 next year.
