Students raise 630 pounds for Willen Hospice

February 2010

Holding a contest to guess how many sweets could be stuffed inside a blazer was just one of the bright ideas from young people to raise money for Willen Hospice.

Year 8 students at The Milton Keynes Academy were so moved by an assembly given by staff from Willen Hospice that they decided to raise money to support its work in caring for seriously ill people.

Head of Year 8 Anne Caines said: "The students worked very hard and came up with a range of activities to raise money including a sponsored football match and lots of competitions including guessing the tiger's birthday and how many pennies in a jam jar."

Other Academy students joined in the fundraising by rehearsing singing and dancing performances in their own time, and then spending a day entertaining shoppers in Middleton Hall.

A cheque totaling £630 was presented by students to Allison Waterhouse, Community Fundraiser at Willen Hospice.

Allison thanked the students and said: "It's fantastic to see young people working and engaging with Willen Hospice. Sometimes it's a job to get the message across to young people that the hospice is not just for elderly people but for people of all ages from 18 onwards. The money raised will go towards providing the services needed for our patients and their families."
