Students perform on the big stage

February 2010

Sixteen BTEC fashion and dance students had the opportunity to display their talents by performing on a professional stage at Milton Keynes Theatre on February 7.

The students were also invited to do a repeat performance of their work relating to ‘Dawn Chorus' at Milton Keynes Gallery in front of Ed Vaizey, Shadow Minister for the Arts plus lots of local dignitaries.

Dawn Chorus is a major multi-screen installation in which human voices recreate the chorus sung at dawn by birds. It is running at Milton Keynes Gallery until April 4.

During intensive rehearsals, students worked with the Dancing Brick theatre company and Dawn Chorus facilitating artists Neil Luck and Marcus Coates. This involved using the sounds of mobile phones to imitate birdsong.

Teacher Rasma Freimanis said the project had been a big success, and described the young performers as "outstanding".

She added: "Not only did the Academy cross over in departments but also worked together with two local primary schools. Students had a short time given on a subject matter they were unfamiliar with - but they pulled all stops out on the day."
