On Tuesday the 19th of October, over 100 delegates from across the Milton Keynes gathered at Jury's Inn to agree the agenda of the citizens:mk alliance over the next year. Milton Keynes Academy is a firm supporter of citizens:mk, which is a developing alliance of community groups - churches, mosques, schools, unions and community associations - that will work together for a better Milton Keynes.
A group of Year 12 and 11 students had completed surveys with all year groups leading up to the assembly; finding out what our children feel are priorities for improving Milton Keynes. Five students from Studio 6 gave a presentation on the number one issue for Academy students: safety. Our students feel strongly that moving around Milton Keynes can be quite a scary experience and that everyone has a right to feel safe and secure as they lead their daily lives.
The students gave a professional presentation exploring some of the issues and possible solutions. They got a ringing endorsement from the other delegates when their issue was voted as the number one priority for the citizens:mk agenda.
Working as part of citizens:mk enables students to see local democracy in action and gives them the confidence and the understanding to make a difference.
