Maths + Puzzles = Fun

Solving maths puzzles added up to a big hit with Year 7 students recently.

Staff from The Happy Puzzle Company set teams different puzzles to solve as quickly as possible.

Assistant Principal with responsibility for Year 7, Mrs Caines, said the students enjoyed the event: “It was organised for the breakthrough group who have been identified as being able to achieve high grades in maths.  By completing the puzzles they were able to develop their thinking skills and work out problems.”

Student Hannah Copson enjoyed working with her group to fit different shapes into a square: “It’s better than normal maths lessons,” she said: “It’s easier to solve puzzles in a team.”

Another student, Ryan Beardmore, added: “It’s a lot of fun and it makes maths interesting.”

The event was one of the activities included in Family Learning Week and was attended by a parent.

The Family Learning Week programme included a variety of ways in which parents and carers could get involved with learning ranging from helping to build a garden to interpreting blood splatter patterns in forensic science.
