Maths became a lot more fun recently for a group of 60 Year 10 students.
They were visited by the Creative Maths Network bus which was touring city schools to give lively and unusual Maths lessons.
Academy students stepped onto giant outdoor chessboards to investigate y = mx + c and looked at solving linear equations and tackling misconceptions about negative numbers by combining mole hills, mole holes, frogs and scales.
Acting Head of Maths Karen Williams-Kassaei said: “It’s been great for kids to have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom in such an interesting way and I believe that it will motivate them and improve their interest in Maths.”
The Creative Maths Network formed in response to demand from the Milton Keynes Maths Partnership, MKMP. It is a regular opportunity for likeminded teachers to get together and share ideas and resources.
Jane Burton from MK Council explained that the 10 local schools visited by the bus were able to choose from eight innovative lessons ranging from understanding Pythagoras to algebra. “The lessons have been amazing,” she said: “We have received fantastic support from the schools and I definitely think pupils have made progress.”
