Making Language our Business Day

Danke, merci – for a great opportunity to learn about modern foreign languages.

Year 8 students spent the morning of March 10 participating in the Academy’s Making Language our Business Day, focusing on the importance of speaking French and German.

Taking part in a cafe experience was a big hit, with students ordering from French or German menus and then sampling food such as sausage and cheese from the two countries.

Students also took part in an advertising campaign and had the chance to meet business people who explained why speaking different languages was so important in the workplace.

Student Kevin Gibba said he was enjoying the event: “We were able to speak to business people and that will help us make choices in our later lifestyles. I may choose to learn a language now because I think it will help me with my job.”

Student Naomi Acqunaye added: “The cafe was good. It gave us a chance to practice our German and made us think more about languages.”

The event was held to encourage students to consider taking a foreign modern language as a subject option next year.
