Milton Keynes Academy hosted a celebration event of the East African Community on Saturday 12th November. It was a direct result of discussions with the local East African community in the summer and had been planned in partnership with the communtiy, EMASS and Milton Keynes Academy.
It was a day of fun and celebration as well as an opportunity for giving information on educational pathways and opportunities, support services available and community organisations. The singer Abdiqadir AJ provided a huge hit and came back for several encores. The snowboard simulator and the hoola hoop workshop were very popular. Lunch was provided and everyone enjoyed a spicy buffet.
Students both at local feeder schools and at Stantonbury and the Academy had entered a Poetry Slam after working with Yaw, a local poet and playwrite. Academy students Liban Ahmed and Nura Sheikh from Year 9 gained second and third place against stiff competition.
Zeinab Sulemani who had worked since July planning and publicising the event said: “It hasn’t been an easy task – but the results and attendance has left me inspired to continue being part of organising such events. If the community is hard to reach, we will reach it through means they find comfortable and accessible. I am ready for the next one”.
