Guest speaker Gail Emms MBE had a very busy night at the Academy recently. She not only had the audience at the Annual Academy Sports Awards on the edge of their seats, enthralled at the personal experience she shared of her road to sporting success, she then also officially opened the Academy’s brand new gym facilities.
Gail started playing badminton at the age of four, and was destined to reach the top of her sport. She had a glittering career that saw her win numerous medals and titles, ultimately becoming world champion. She shared the hugely positive impact that sport can have on life and wellbeing.
The glittering award ceremony rejoiced in the sporting success of so many students at the Academy. Vanessa Sallai received loud applause when she collected the prize for special sports recognition. She is the UK number 1 for her age group for taekwondo, and has recently represented the UK in the World Championships in Argentina.
The Year 10 boy’s football team, swept up the award for the team of the year. The highlight of their many successes was getting to the Quarter Finals of the national schools cup, before losing narrowly to the eventual winners.
All round sports stars were recognised in the individual awards, with Sara Al-Said winning the girls’ sports personality of the year, and Kevin Sude winning the boys award. Sara has excelled in netball, rounders and athletics. Her approach has always embodied that of a true team player. Kevin has shone in basketball, cricket, dodgeball and football. He always approached everything he does with a smile on his face, alongside always showing a steely determination to perform to the best of his ability.
Following excitement of the awards evening, Gail then cut the ribbon on the new gym facilities at the Academy. This represents the culmination of a significant investment by the Academy to further enhance its leading edge facilities. The gym has a wide range of modern equipment such as exercise bikes and weights, which will help ensure that all Academy students can enjoy a range of sporting facilities, as well as ensuring that the stars of the future continue to emerge.
