The BTEC National Certificate in Health and Social Care provides a specialist work related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the health and social care sector.
The specialist units give learners a choice of emphasis and may dictate the areas to be studied later on at university.
Subject Skills
• Understanding the importance of good communication.
• Knowledge of health and safety issues and the legislation which supports it.
• Understanding the importance of diversity.
• Understanding how the organ systems within the body work and how malfunctions can be detected through routine measurements and observations.
• Understanding the physical, intellectual, emotional and social aspects of growth and development that occurs across the main life stages.
• All practical skills related to working in health and social care.
Course Content
12 Units of study to be completed over a two year period.
In addition to the six units studied for the BTEC National Award, the BTEC National Certificate also includes units on:
• Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care.
• Sociological Perspectives for Health and Social Care.
• Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care.
• Supporting and Protecting Adults.
• Health Education.
• Nutrition for Health and Social Care.
At least five GCSE subjects graded A - C. You will also need a good command of English and a genuine interest in health and social care.
All work will be marked internally. There are no exams.
A variety of teaching methods will be used. These include discussions, presentations, role play and personal research.Work experience will be part of every student’s lessons. Guests will be invited in to lead discussions and give help to students from time to time.
Students who complete the course successfully can attend university and pursue a suitable degree course.
There are numerous career options for students of health and social care. The type of career will depend on their overall interest, and on their subject specialism.
