This course is designed to provide work-related qualifications in business. It gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare them for employment or higher education.
Subject Skills
All students will develop their personal skills in the areas of leadership, team working, communication and problem solving within a business context. They will also develop skills in financial principles, business administration, personal selling, enterprise, recruitment and business start-up.
Course Content
This course consists of four core units and two specialist units from a choice of several. The core units are as follows:
Exploring Business Activity
• The different types of business activity and ownership.
• How the type of business influences the setting of strategic aims and objectives.
• Functional activities and organisational structure.
• How external factors in the business environment impact on organisations.
Investigating Business Resources
• How human resources are managed.
• The purpose of managing physical and technological resources.
• How to access sources of finance.
• How to interpret financial statements.
Introduction to Marketing
• The concept and principles of marketing and their application in the business environment.
• How and why marketing research is conducted by organisations.
• How marketing information is used by organisations.
• How marketing techniques are used to increase demand for products (goods and services).
Effective People, Communication and Information
• The importance of employing suitable people.
• How to communicate using appropriate methods.
We currently deliver the following two specialist units for this award:
Introduction to Accounting
• The purpose of accounting and the categorisation of business income and expenditure.
• How to communicate using appropriate methods.
• Different types of information and how it can be processed.
Investigating Recruitment and Selection
• The processes involved in recruitment planning.
• The documentation involved in the recruitment process.
• Selection interviews.
• The implications of the regulatory framework on the process of recruitment and selection.
You need at least 5 A*- C GCSE grades including English and preferably including Maths. Alternatively a BTEC First Diploma with Merit or Distinction and GCSE English.
There is no exam on this course. Assessment is 100% coursework. Students must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have met all of the assessment objectives. This will be evidenced through practical assignments, oral presentations/demonstrations, written reports and project work. Submission deadlines are set throughout the year.
Due to the coursework nature of this course you will need to ensure that you are organised and enjoy spending time working through a range of individual tasks.
The course involves a variety of learning methods including group work, presentations, industrial visits, guest speakers from industry and interactive activities.
After completing this course students find themselves ideally prepared to enter a range of professions including financial services, sales
and retailing, office administration, banking, etc.
This course provides solid and varied business knowledge and is good preparation for a successful career. It also provides the necessary entry requirements for a wide range of higher education courses including HNDs and degrees.
This course is equivalent to one GCE A-Level.
