Level 2 BTEC: First Diploma in Health and Social Care

Objectives:

Students will gain experience and insight into the health and social care sector.

Learners who successfully complete this qualification should be able to progress to employment in the sector, in a supervised role. Progression could also be to further study, such as the BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care or other Level 3 courses.

The qualification will give students a range of skills that can be used in different work roles.

Subject Skills

• Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations using written reports, spoken word, and a range of non-verbal techniques.
• Being able to recognise the needs of individuals and to be able to devise suitable health improvement plans with short, medium and long-term targets to aim for.
• An understanding of the importance of cultural diversity and the subsequent consequences for health and social care workers.
• Understanding how the body works in relation to the structure and function of organs and organ systems within the body.To understand how malfunctions can be detected through routine measurements and observations.
• Knowledge of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social aspects of growth and development that occurs across the main life stages.
• Ability to recognise positive and negative influences on individuals at different life stages.
• Understanding the principles of good nutrition in order to maintain good health.
• Knowledge of good practice relating to food safety and food hygiene.

Course Content

There will be six units of study to complete during the year:

Unit 1: Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors.
Unit 2: Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors.
Unit 4: Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care.
Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care.
Unit 6: Human Lifespan Development.
Unit 9: The Impact of Diet on Health.

Prior Attainment

There are no particular qualifications needed to join the course, but a good command of English and a genuine interest in health and social care would be a distinct advantage.

Assessment

There are no exams. Students will be assessed on coursework.

Marks from all six units will go towards the final grade.

Teaching Methods

A variety of teaching methods are used including discussions, presentations, role play, group work, lectures and presentations by visiting speakers. There will also be opportunities for work experience in real health and social care settings.

Learners will have the opportunity to develop their own research skills and will have regular access to IT facilities in order to present their work in a suitable manner.

Progression

Students can progress to Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Award or BTEC National Certificate which may in turn lead to university courses in nursing, midwifery, childcare, social work, nutrition or a range of courses related in some way.

Alternatively, some learners are able to go directly into childcare jobs and pursue their studies while working in their chosen field.
