Objectives:

Knowledge and Understanding
The aims of the course are for students to gain knowledge and understanding about society and the world. They will also understand the concept of identity including how your age, ethnicity and gender affects how people respond to you within society.

Analysis and Evaluation
The aims of the course are for students to develop analysis and evaluation skills enabling them to make informed judgements in relation to the strength or weakness of a piece of research or a particular resource e.g. a newspaper article. Students will be able to identify and interpret the information and provide a judgement in relation to the resource distinguishing between facts and opinions.

Subject Skills
• You will be able to explain sociological theories and research.
• Application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of evidence e.g. you will be able to judge resources and describe the strengths and weaknesses.
• Quality of written communication e.g. you will need to communicate your knowledge in a logical manner using sentences and paragraphs.

Course Content

Module One:
Culture and Identity

Students study different types of culture including mass culture and popular culture. Students study the term ‘identity’ and what it means to other people. They will examine the relationship of identity to age, disability, ethnicity, gender and sexuality.

Module Two:
Health and Sociological Methods

Students study health including the unequal distribution of health and illnesses in the UK. They will look at how your health is determined by your social class (how much money you have), age, gender, ethnicity and religion. Students study the causes and the types of people that develop mental illnesses and the role of medicine.

Prior Attainment

You need at least 5 A*- C grades including GCSE English.

Assessment

Students’ work is assessed through 100 per cent examination, therefore you must enjoy and be comfortable doing exams if you choose this course.

The first exam takes place in January and lasts for one hour.

The second exam takes place in June and lasts one hour and 30 minutes.

Teaching Methods

This subject is taught using a variety of teaching methods. Handouts are usually provided in class containing the key information in addition to the information included in the textbook. Due to the content of the course, there are lots of discussions and debates in class and you get more out of this subject if you enjoy taking part! There will also be many group work activities including presentations and role play.You will also complete regular essay practice in exam conditions which will be marked using the exam criteria in order to prepare you fully for the exam.

Progression to A2

The A2 course is even more interesting than the AS course and it includes the study of beliefs in society and crime and deviance. For example, you will examine the reasons why people belong to different religions and you will examine how this affects their life. In addition, you will also develop an understanding of why people commit crimes.

You must achieve at least an E at AS level to progress onto the A2 course.

Career Opportunities

You may take on a role working in one of the following sectors: social work, fostering, child protection, young offenders, homeless, people’s homes or people with disabilities. Sociology students also work in government departments, politics, health, teaching, psychology, HR and managerial roles.

1. You expect to get 5 A*- C’s including English at GCSE.
2. You enjoy debates, discussion and you are comfortable with examinations as the only form of assessment.
3. You take an interest in the world you live in and are interested in society and the differences between people within society.
