AS Level: Physics

Objectives:

Students will:
• Develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for physics
• Appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society
• Develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works
• Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of physics and how they relate to each other

Subject Skills

• Ability to analyse and evaluate scientific knowledge and processes.
• Ability to apply scientific knowledge and processes to unfamiliar situations including those related to social and scientific issues.
• Skills to assess the validity, reliability and credibility of scientific information.

Course Content

Unit 1: Mechanics
Students will learn about motion, forces in action, and work and energy.

Unit 2: Electrons, Waves and Photons
This covers electrical current, resistance, DC circuits, waves and quantum physics.

Unit 3: Practical Skills In Physics
This practical skills unit is teacher assessed.

Prior Attainment

You need at least 5 A*- C grades including GCSE Physics.

Assessment

Students’ work is assessed course work and examinations.

Teaching Methods

The A2 course consists of three units:

Unit 1: The Newtonian World
Students will learn about Newton’s laws and momentum, circular motion oscillations and thermal physics.

Unit 2: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics
This covers electric and magnetic fields, capacitors and exponential decay, nuclear physics, medical imaging and modelling the universe.

Unit 3: Skills In Physics
This practical skills unit is teacher assessed and externally moderated by the examination board.

Progression to A2

You must achieve at least an E at AS level to progress onto the A2 course.

Career Opportunities

Chemical engineering, radiography, biotechnology.
