AS Level: Chemistry

Objectives:

Students will:

• Develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for chemistry
• Appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society
• Develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works
• Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they relate to each other

Course Content

Module One:
Atoms, Bonds and Groups

Students will examine atoms and reactions, the bonding and structure of electrons and the Periodic Table.

Module Two:
Chains, Energy and Resources

This unit covers basic concepts and hydrocarbons, alcohols, halogenoalkanes, energy and resources.

Module Three:
Practical Skills in Chemistry

This is teacher assessed and externally moderated by the examination board.

Prior Attainment

You need at least 5 A*- C grades including GCSE chemistry.

Assessment

Students’ work is assessed through a mixture of course assessment and examinations.

Teaching Methods

This subject is taught using a variety of teaching methods and there will be opportunities for practical experiments.You will also complete regular essay practice in exam conditions which will be marked using the exam criteria in order to prepare you fully for the exam.

Progression to A2

The A2 course builds on what you have learned in the AS course and develops your skills and knowledge in chemistry.

The first module covers the study of rings, acids and amines, and you will then go on to examine polymers and synthesis. The third module focuses on analysis with reference to chromatography and spectroscopy.

You must achieve at least an E at AS level to progress onto the A2 course.

Pharmacy, medicine, environmental science, agriculture, biotechnology.
