AS Level: Art and Design

Objectives:

Students will develop:
• Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers
• Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills

• Independence of mind in relation to developing their own ideas, refining your own intentions and personal outcomes
• An enthusiasm and enjoyment of art, craft and design
• Experience of working with a broad range of media, including traditional and new media technologies
• An understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design processes and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate

Subject Skills

The course has been designed to ensure that not only practical artistic skills and abilities should be developed, but also that the study of art and design and its various contexts should form part of any student’s education. In addition to making artifacts, students will be encouraged to reflect on their own work and on the work of others.

Course Content

This course is both practical and theoretical, so there will be lots of ‘hands on’ lessons, where art skills in both 2D and 3D will be developed and explored.We will also study artists and styles of art, linked to the practical work being undertaken. Students will have opportunities to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary and contextual sources. They will experiment with media and processes, and develop and refine their ideas.

Prior Attainment

At least a C grade in GCSE Art and Design, plus 4 other GCSE’s A*- C.

Assessment

Coursework submitted in summer – 60% of overall mark.

Externally set exam in summer – 40% of overall mark.

Teaching Methods

There is a lot of experimentation involved, and students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas in many different materials and ways. An open mind, creativity and willingness to learn are all vital to this course!

Progression to A2

There will be practical work and personal study, building on skills developed in the first year of study.

Career Opportunities

Graphic design, product design, installation, fine art, history of art, jewellery, sculpture, illustration, fashion and textiles.
