The Business and Enterprise Specialism

The Milton Keynes Academy has what is called a 'Business and Enterprise Specialism'. Many schools now have an area in which they seek to provide extra focus and support, such as modern languages, sport or ICT.

In our case, we believe passionately in the importance of vocational education, that is, in giving students the opportunity to develop skills that will be important to them after they finish here. In line with the vision of our sponsors, Edge, we believe there are many paths to success, and that one of the best ways to learn is by 'doing'. We have, therefore, decided that the best way to achieve this is to choose a Business and Enterprise specialism.

This enables us to develop outstanding links with a wide range of local employers, who can then provide exciting and interesting real life examples to students as part of their learning experience at the Academy. This can be as varied as employers coming in to the Academy to share their real life experiences, through to giving students greater opportunities to see and sample many more different types of employer, so that they can make well informed choices.

Equally, the Academy through this specialism, is seeking to ensure that students have many interesting opportunities to become enterprising and resourceful, skills that will remain with them when Milton Keynes Academy is but a distant memory!

Business in Residence

As part of the school's pledge to give students the skills and training necessary for their later working lives, Edge and the Academy took a ground breaking decision to base a company inside the school, that company is Marketing and Design Agency, beanwave.

The brother and sister marketing team believed to be the first school business-in-residence can be found inside the Enterprise and Business Hub. Their office space is provided in return for two-three hours a week helping students with enterprise-related projects. James and Celia Bristow thoroughly enjoy working in this fabulous and creative new environment and sharing their considerable real-life business experience with students.

When talking about having a business in residence, Academy Director of Business and Enterprise Sean Hickey said "There is nothing better for young people than seeing a real business operate close-up," he added, "Celia and James have lots of energy and enthusiasm and make great role models."
